Citi to launch crypto custody in 2026. JP Morgan has no plans

Citi will launch a crypto custody solution in 2026. The bank’s Biswarup Chatterjee told CNBC that it plans to offer the service to asset managers and its clients in a few quarters. One of the biggest decisions that a bank has to make is choosing the technology partner for digital asset custody.

“We may have certain solutions that are completely designed and built in-house that are targeted towards certain assets and (a) certain segment of our clients, whereas we may use a … third party, lightweight, nimble solution for other kinds of assets,” Chatterjee told CNBC. “So we’re not currently ruling out anything.”

In June 2022 the bank signed a deal with Metaco, a Swiss crypto custody technology provider that serviced numerous banks. In May 2023, Ripple announced it was acquiring Metaco. Subsequently there were reports that Citi was considering ending the collaboration.
