Today Hyperledger announced the agenda for the Hyperledger Global Forum (HGF) 2021. The virtual event for enterprise blockchain is scheduled for June 8 – 10 and will cater to a global audience by having two daily tracks, one for East and the other West. Frank Yiannis, Deputy Commissioner for Food Policy and Response at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), will give the opening keynote for the EU/US track.

“The benefits of distributed ledger technology have been clear to me for a long time,” said Yiannis. “But food supply chain disruptions and market place imbalances experienced early-on in the COVID-19 pandemic have highlighted how a distributed, decentralized, yet digitally connected food system could be a safer, stronger, and more resilient food system.”

The FDA is responsible for implementing the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and blockchain can play a critical role in traceability. Yiannis previously worked at Walmart where he was the decision-maker who required lettuce suppliers to adopt IBM Food Trust to ensure it can trace the source of food safety outbreaks.
