Mastercard launches early access for Agent Pay for Machines

Mastercard AI agentic payments

Mastercard is starting to roll out its agentic payment solution with Agent Pay for Machines now in early access. What’s more interesting is how the Mastercard solution works. In May 2025 Coinbase unveiled the x402 protocol for AI stablecoin payments, which essentially involves a direct payment to a web-based service from a user’s wallet. While Mastercard leverages the x402 protocol, its agentic payment solution actually settles transactions in batches rather than real time, and Mastercard inserts itself into the process.

The card company’s version takes a protocol built for atomic, final, per-request settlement and bolts on exactly the structure the card networks have always run, which includes a credential registry, a guarantee, and settlement in batches. A skeptical read is that the “trust layer” is the network reinventing its own business model inside a protocol that was designed to make it unnecessary.

But there’s a different pragmatic read. Not every organization is onboarded with stablecoins, even if their tech department probably is. And even then, there’s a proliferation of stablecoins, some of which may be unpalatable for merchants. Much like with card payments, there may be mismatches where a merchant wants to receive dollar stablecoins but the company behind the AI agent plans to pay from a GBP bank account. That needs someone to sit between the agent’s funding source and the merchant’s preferred rail, and someone has to make the IOU credible. Rather than batching being inefficiency, it is what makes fiat funding and multi-rail payouts possible.
