Securitize has launched a dozen tokenized U.S. listed stocks on its platform. The company is one of the strongest proponents of issuer-sponsored tokens, which require the stock issuer (Apple or Microsoft) to initiate the tokenization. But these Securitize tokens will be tokenized entitlements. The launch list is expected to include AAPL, MSFT, NVDA, GOOG, TSLA, META, AMZN, NFLX, CRCL, SPCX, MSTR and PLTR.
In other words, Securitize is acting as a third party tokenizer without issuer involvement. However, these tokens will provide the normal ownership and voting rights that are typical of a broker omnibus account, unlike most of the synthetic tokens issued offshore that use special purpose vehicles (SPVs) without full stock ownership. Securitize positions its entitlement tokens as a potential conversion path. These large companies might choose to issue tokens directly, in which case the Securitize tokens can be converted to the issuer-sponsored versions. It’s a pragmatic step to solve the issuer-sponsored cold start challenge.
The news comes alongside the imminent launch of DTC tokenized securities which will be issued on a private Besu blockchain and the Canton Network. Securitize is issuing on Solana, which is not among DTC’s launch chains. Brokers can issue entitlement tokens on any chain and could back them with DTC tokens, although Securitize has not said whether it plans to. But in practice, regulated tokens will require the investors to be listed on an allowlist. Today the turf war is as much about building a long allowlist as it is about dollar market share.
