CME expands on tokenization plans

During the CME’s Q2 2025 quarterly earnings call yesterday, the management team was asked about the company’s plans for tokenization. In March the CME announced a collaboration with Google Cloud to use its new Google Cloud Universal Ledger.

CME’s COO, Suzanne Sprague, who is leading the efforts, said the focus is on enabling the 24/7 movement of assets.

“We’re thinking about tokenizing cash and other noncash assets for our current ecosystem, not really looking at the clearing space to start. And we’ve now entered the second phase of testing efforts, focusing on our relationship with settlement banks and then eventually extending that to our clearing members and clients,” she said, with the expectation of launching a solution in 2026 to bring the efficiencies to market.
