Today Hyperledger announced the agenda for the Hyperledger Global Forum (HGF) 2021. The virtual event for enterprise blockchain is scheduled for June 8 – 10 and will cater to a global audience by having two daily tracks, one for East and the other West. Frank Yiannis, Deputy Commissioner for Food Policy and Response at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), will give the opening keynote for the EU/US track.

“The benefits of distributed ledger technology have been clear to me for a long time,” said Yiannis. “But food supply chain disruptions and market place imbalances experienced early-on in the COVID-19 pandemic have highlighted how a distributed, decentralized, yet digitally connected food system could be a safer, stronger, and more resilient food system.”

The FDA is responsible for implementing the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and blockchain can play a critical role in traceability. Yiannis previously worked at Walmart where he was the decision-maker who required lettuce suppliers to adopt IBM Food Trust to ensure it can trace the source of food safety outbreaks.

Meanwhile, the pandemic has meant that the Hyperledger community has been very active in online meetings and events. While the alliance has always had a strong presence in Asia, the activity has ramped up during the last year. And that’s paid off in the agenda where numerous projects from India, Japan, Korea and China will be sharing experiences.

“Hyperledger Global Forum is our annual opportunity to bring together the extended enterprise blockchain community and focus on the evolution and impact of our technologies on a global scale,” said Brian Behlendorf, executive director of Hyperledger and general manager for Blockchain, Healthcare and Identity at the Linux Foundation.

“With this, our third HGF, we are embracing the virtual nature of things as an opportunity to reach a larger global audience and host conversations about our technologies, use cases and future applications across time zones and, thanks to real-time translation, in local languages. We are at the critical point in market adoption and are looking forward to addressing the key questions of ‘why blockchain’ and ‘why now’ with this great line-up of speakers and content.”
