Nomura’s digital asset subsidiary Laser Digital has completed its registration as a crypto asset exchange service provider in Japan under the Payment Services Act. The approval is the first new registration in the country’s digital asset sector since 2022.
Laser Digital Japan will initially provide institutional liquidity solutions for domestic virtual asset service providers (VASP), with plans to offer institutional trading services later.
The registration adds to a broader expansion push. Since its 2022 launch, Laser Digital has built three main business lines in trading, asset management and venture investment. In January, the company applied to the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency for a national trust bank charter, receiving preliminary conditional approval in May. That entity would offer digital asset custody, staking and spot trading to US institutional clients.
