Visa becomes validators on Tempo blockchain co-founded by Stripe

Visa, Stripe and Standard Chartered’s Zodia Custody are the first external validators to go live on the Tempo blockchain, co-founded by Stripe and crypto venture firm Paradigm. A key aim of the blockchain, which went into production last month, is to support agentic commerce. At the time Tempo also launched the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP), an open standard that enables AI agents to pay for services autonomously, which Visa has already extended to support card payments. Visa stated that it is managing its validator node in-house.

Tempo is purpose built for payments, with dedicated payment lanes that prevent other network activity from displacing payment transactions. Fees are paid to validators in stablecoins rather than a volatile native token. In the early stages the defined set of validators means the blockchain is permissioned, although the aim is to become permissionless over time. However, it is not yet clear how validators will be incentivized once that transition takes place.

“By operating a validator on Tempo, we’re extending Visa’s commitment to reliability, security, and trust into blockchain networks – supporting the development of stablecoin payment systems that meet the high operating standards our clients and partners expect,” said Cuy Sheffield, Head of Crypto, Visa.
